Decluttering
Your Space
By Joy Abrams MA, FSII
Have you
recently looked at your room and said, I must clean this up
because I can t find anything anymore . If this is the case
it is time for you to simply declutter your space. By doing
this you will feel better as you are organizing your space
and removing things that are symbolically weighing you down.
Here are
some simple tips to help you in the process of ridding your
space of clutter:
Clean
out your drawers and closets. Use three bags: one marked save,
one marked share, and one marked send. Put into your save
bag anything that you must keep such as special clothes and
important records ect. Put into your share bag anything that
you have not worn for two years. Share things that others
might want and that you will not use. In your send bag send
to the trash items like dried up pens and old calendars.
Sort the things in your saved bags into piles. Put files into
boxes and group your clothes by type. Sort your files in general
categories such as: health, financial, personal and professional.
Finish one corner of your room at a time. Don t try to do
this all in one day. It may take weeks for you to do this.
Try using a timer and set the timer for one half hour. After
that time just stop cleaning your clutter and resume the next
day for a half hour. In this way you won t get frustrated
of letting go of clutter and organizing your space.
As you sort through all of your stuff you will find that you
feel personally transformed in the process. Internal clutter
slowly evaporates as you organize your place. As you create
new space by removing clutter you are symbolically creating
new areas for good things to come into your life. It also
makes you feel lighter.
